May 2022 Monthly Round Up

Welcome to Pride Month. The celebration of being you and being proud. We have started the summer and it seems that, in Ireland anyway, the weather knows it which is rare for a change. Of course, summer means exams for some, finals, essays and tests but, once they are done, blissful freedom awaits! Our regular readers may have noticed that our posts stopped for a while and that was to allow me (Emma) time to step away and stop churning out posts just for the sake of it but also due, in part, to work being at an all time high for Niamh. We don’t want to post blogposts that we don’t love and you won’t enjoy but we also don’t want to feel like we must post as often as possible. We blog for fun not for profit and I don’t know about you but my creativity always seems to fail me when put under pressure.

But back to Pride month! For any of our new friends, we are rainbow coloured all year round because we are proud of and accepting of you all all year round and you should be proud to be your authentic real self, whoever that may be, 365 (or 366) days a year not just during Pride Month. Let your flag fly.

Book of the Month

E: The Quarterback and the Ballerina – yes, it’s as cheesy as it sounds and more but it was suggested to me so I read it. A bit different to what I usually read.

N: ‘The Surface Breaks’ by Louise O Neill. I adore retelling and inspirations from fairytale. Louise’s book is obviously inspired by the Little Mermaid but, is based around the irish coast line. Mermaids, humans and mischief along the way.

Movies & TV

TV Show Picks

E: Obi Wan Kenobi – I’ve seen two episodes and already it’s amazing. I’m not a huge Star Wars need who knows all the lore but I do really enjoy this series so far.

N: We started Obi Wan Kenobi in our household this month and oh my gosh… the Star Wars nerds cannot cope.

Good Movie Recommendation:

E: Pirates of the Caribbean – I watched all of them and you just have to love those movies for being so different and not taking themselves too seriously.

N: Since I haven’t seen certain marvel movies this month as, I have to wait for Emma… this months good movie goes to Downtown Abbey: A New Era. Hear me out on this one. It is so much better than the first movie and actually has a fun storyline plot. I won’t spoil anything but, my favourite aspect of the story were deffinately Hollywood’s newest scriptwriter and unlikely but unforgettable pairing.

Cheesy Bad Movie Recommendation:

E: The Legend of Hercules – the cringe I felt watching this was monumental. There was so much potential.

N: My cheesy movie suggestion goes to a series this month: Season 2 of Bridgerton. It wasn’t as scandalous as the first season but a good cheesy relationship storyline.

Gaming Picks

E: Gran Turismo 7 – been playing this a lot lately and it’s still good fun. Even tried it without any of the assists on: I’m crap but I tried.

N: Did zero gaming this month… but, the new F1 22 trailer has me excited to get back racing.

Music

Single of the Month

E: good girls bad girls – Charlie Curtis-Beard

N: ‘Cate’s Brother’ Maisie Peters. We were waiting months for it and by gosh was it worth the wait!

Album/EP of the Month

E: Dark Matter – CamelPhat

N: Picking a second single this month as it got me through my countless sleepless nights ‘Liebestraum’ by Yiruma

Favourite Things

Favourite Thing About May?

E: That I got a chance to relax, reset and step away from everything to do something entirely for myself this month. Taking care of yourself and doing what you want isn’t selfish, it’s needed.

N: Realistically that it is over. It was a fun month but mostly it was a tough month. Onwards to an easier few weeks within the mayhem.

Favourite Item of the Month

E: My new notebook that I’ve been working on for myself. Lots of data and statistics for me to enjoy and look over.

N: Not many people will know this but, for the majority of May, I was battling off an extremely stubborn viral infection leaving me sick for more than 3/4 of May. For this reason, my GirlsGottaChange Journal was my favourite item. I had to work through most of it and the journal itself made me remember everything.

Event of the Month

E: I honestly had no events to go to this month. I’m doing my best to limit spending wherever possible so I can afford to go to the Netherlands after the summer so that means fewer events.

N: My Chemical Romance, what a night. There are very few people in the world I’d queue hours on end for (aka my sister) to make sure she got pit but the icing on the cake was being front row. That entire gig was a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Moment of the Month

E: Watching a Mexican guy stand on his car, slip and almost fall into said car then sign a contract to stay with the team that owns the aforementioned car. Vamos Checo Perez! Congratulations on winning one of my favourite Grand Prix on the calendar!

N: A full circle moment of leading a Cruinniu na nOg workshop for kids.

Your Quote of the Month

E: “Some people are silently struggling with burdens that would break our backs.” So if you can be anything, be kind.

N: “Why should you continue going after your dreams? Because seeing the look on the faces of the people who said you couldn’t… will be priceless.” Kevin Ngo

Three things you are most excited about for June

E: Both Billie Eilish and Dermot Kennedy’s concerts are on this month so that’s two things and it’s nearly summer so it’s about time to start earning some cash for the holidays.

N: Firstly, I match up with Emma with Billie Eilish and Dermot Kennedy together but; I have a few other music bits I’m excited for too! Secondly, the back to back weekends of my forest school course! I am ready to get my practical aspects signed off. Lastly, school tour season is in full swing so, creating memory for kids.
