The New Music Mega POST 28/5 – 4/6

What a crazy two weeks it has been! Unfortunately, this week, we are a few days late because work has both of us run ragged as Ireland reopens. After a little unexpected time off we are back with another list of must listen to new music choices. We are here, as always, to provide you with a list of our favourite new music but we’re including new releases from both the 28th of May and the 4th of June. We are including a great mix of home grown and international talent plus we have plenty to choose from, from a variety of acts both big and small. The past two weeks of new music took us by surprise with a number of acoustics, surprise music drops from a number of our favourites and highly anticipated songs. So sit back and get ready to lose yourself in the music as we introduce you to 18 new singles, EPs and albums for this week’s edition of New Music.

As It Is – IDGAF

We have been patiently waiting for As It Is to drop a new single and here it is! The British-American rock band is back with their first single since last year. We’ve been fans of As It Is since 2012 and can honestly say ‘IDGAF’ is one of As It Is’ best songs to date. We have entered a new era for the band, along with a shake up in the line up, but the guys have never lost their roots and prove time and time again that their tough but honest lyrics stand out from so many other bands. ‘IDGAF’ is the perfect mash up of honesty and drowning feelings seen in the ‘Never Happy Ever After’ era to ‘The Great Depression’ era with the overall sound pulling the best and unique sounds of each era and making them work together effortlessly!

Billie Eilish – Lost Cause

The queen of sad bangers has delivered again. The fourth single from the upcoming album ‘Happier Than Ever’ is all about placing a person on a pedestal and making excuses for the things that they do. Do these people deserve that? No. They are a ‘Lost Cause’ and that won’t change, so it’s time to get out of there. The track has a bluesy tone to it and, musically, really goes for the minimalistic approach. Lyrically, this track is amazing and it is really worth focusing on the words and the confidence behind them.

Brynn Cartelli – Based On A True Story EP

Next up, we have our TikTok find! Brynn Cartelli may be familiar to many as the winner of season 14 of the American hit TV show The Voice. She released her debut EP entitled ‘Based On A True Story’ on May 28th and, honestly, if you haven’t heard this artist sing yet make sure you give her music a listen! She is my favourite winner of the American The Voice which Brynn won at the age of fifteen. ‘Based On A True Story’ contains six songs which have truly been worth the wait. Each one shows off Byrnn’s vocal range while the song order aids the story telling in her songs. ‘Imaginary Stranger’ is our song choice to listen to first!

Calvin Harris & Tom Grennan – By Your Side

Is it too early to call a song “the Song of the Summer”? Because Calvin Harris and Tom Grennan have nailed it! It’s a bouncy, bright, fun pop-house track with callbacks to the sounds that Calvin Harris used to launch and propel himself into the musical stratosphere. Tom Grennan’s vocals will always bring a smile to your face and this feel good anthem deserves a spot on every radio station. The song exudes nothing but good times and sunshine and will always put you in a fantastic mood.

Conan Gray – Astronomy Acoustic

The first of the acoustics on our list is Conan Gray’s ‘Astronomy’. Niamh adores a good acoustic and Conan hits all the right chords with this! As this acoustic was in association with Samsung Music Galaxy, we are taking this moment to say “Thank You” to Samsung Music Galaxy! If you haven’t heard ‘Astronomy’ yet make sure you give it a listen. Both versions are incredibly emotional but, with the acoustic, Conan has nothing to hide behind. There is truly something about just the artist, their guitar and a microphone. Be warned, I always go on an emotional rollercoaster listening to this one but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Elina Filice – Flight Risk EP

Our regular readers may be familiar with our next artist, Elina Filice, as we featured her last Summer. We are delighted to see her latest body of work ‘Flight Risk’ EP! For anyone who is new to Elina’s music she is a Canadian singer-songwriter, spoken word artist and rapper. ‘Flight Risk’ contains six songs that showcase the very best of what Elina does! The songs collectively cover the theme of travel, adventure and getting lost to find yourself! The song we have featured above is ‘Thinking Of You’ but we also recommend checking out ‘Everything About You’ as they were our two favourite tracks on the EP. However, each song from Elina on the EP has a chill, easy listening vibe with important lessons so get ready to get lost in ‘Flight Risk’.

Felix Cartal & KROY – Too Late

Next up we have Felix Cartal and KROY new single ‘Too Late’ and trust me when I say you need to add this straight onto your Summer Playlist! For anyone not familiar with these two artists, Felix Cartal is a Canadian Electronic producer while KROY is a Montreal based singer-songwriter and composer. We’ll be doing a full review on this fantastic song in the coming days but, for now give it a listen as the beat is infectious and will have you dancing along from the opening few seconds of the song. In between all the dancing to ‘Too Late’ keep an ear out for the lyrics, this one is going to hit hard with a number of listeners.

Greyface – Underground Star

The first of our Homegrown Heroes on the list is Alternative Dublin based group Greyface! We first saw Greyface live back in 2019, Niamh was blown away by their performance. ‘Underground Star’ is their first release in quite some time but it doesn’t disappoint! This number is not for the faint hearted but if you are a sucker for alternative with a heavy use of instrumental moments paired with powerful vocals, this one’s for you!

Jax Jones – Feels

‘Feels’ is clearly made to make you feel good and have fun and it definitely does all that. It is also a sample of what is yet to come from Jax Jones as ‘Feels’ is the first single taken from the upcoming EP ‘Deep Joy.’ This song was inspired by a hugely transformative time in Jax Jones’ life and driven by the desire to create music brought about by joy and it certainly shows. With a very 80s vibe, Jax Jones’ latest dance floor filler will bring a smile to your face.

LiL Lotus ft. Chrissy Costanza – Romantic Disaster

We’re just not going to admit how many times we have listened to ‘Romantic Disaster’ since it dropped but let’s just say it is definitely over 100 times. It is one of our favourite songs on our New Music list this week! Never would we have paired LilL Lotus with Chrissy Costanza but, trust me when I say, it 100% works and they have created such a catchy and fun song! I really enjoy the concept of ‘Romantic Disaster’. The lyrics are honestly what goes through a lot of our heads. The beat had me hooked from the very beginning of the song and those harmonies are stunning.

Lost+Found – Searching

Featuring the beautiful vocals of Ruthanne, Lost+Found have released ‘Searching’ which is a celebration of finding the right person to love. Lost+Found consistently provide fantastic dance tracks and if you’re looking for a feel good track to workout to you can stop ‘Searching’ (get it?). The track will have you bopping to its beat in no time flat and is definitely a song to play loud this summer while you enjoy a few beverages. The song screams chilled out, sunny days and it’s definitely going to fill dance floors this summer.

Mimi Webb – Good Without (Stripped Back Version)

Mimi Webb has truly gone global since we last mentioned her here on Our Muchness Guide. Before performing on The Ellen Show, Mimi treated her fans to a stripped back version of her hit single ‘Good Without’. Grab your hairbrush and get ready to emotionally perform this one in your room as Mimi has knocked it out of the park yet again. The stripped back version makes Mimi’s incredible vocal range the focal point of this version of ‘Good Without’. It is truly worth a listen!

Modernlove. – lmk (if you wanna see me)

Modernlove. are another of our homegrown heroes that released music this week. ‘Imk (if you wanna see me)’ is a four track EP that dropped on June 8th. We first saw these guys back in 2019 at Riverfest and knew there was something special about them! They are an Indie-pop band from Dublin but don’t let that influence your thoughts on them as their sound is one of my favourites within the Indie-Pop genre! The EP itself is made up of four songs which will have you hooked from the very first listen! Every song is fun, unique and as we say here in Ireland “It’s such a bop!” An EP we’ll be blasting throughout the Summer as it screams Summer Vibes! Personally, I’m recommending you listen to ‘I know it’s tearing you apart’ first.

Only the Poets – Speak Out EP

Drum roll please ladies and gentlemen as Only The Poets debut EP has been released into the world! Thanks to the Indiependence 2019 music festival in Ireland we fell in love with this band’s sound! We are featuring them next week as our Spotlight Artist’s for June. Only The Poets are a UK Indie Pop-Rock band. ‘Speak Out’ features five songs that were all written by the band in 2020. As such, the emotions within the songs and the lyrics themselves resonate with anyone who listens to the ‘Speak Now’ EP. The EP is a solid showcase of everything we love about Only The Poets and we listened to it from start to finish without skipping any song. If we had to pinpoint songs it would have to be ‘No More Lonely’ and ‘If You’d Only Try’.

Ruthanne – Safe Place

A second appearance for Ruthanne in this post with her own release and, honestly, I never have a bad word to say about Ruthanne. She constantly delivers stunning vocals on her releases and Safe Place is no exception. The song is about finding a place where you can talk without judgement and heal after dark and tough times. The song is stunning in its simplicity and lets the listener really appreciate the lyrics and vocal performance while being a real and very honest thank you to the people who provide a safe haven in the roughest times while offering the same in return.

Sigrid – Mirror

Sigrid has brought us the self-love song of the summer with the message being that we should all be a little kinder to the person looking back at us in the mirror. After being so quiet for so long, Sigrid reappeared with a disco-esque self-empowerment anthem with funk tones that comes at the perfect time. With its infectious tune and Sigrid’s unique vocals, you’ll be dancing to this song all summer and we’re absolutely okay with you doing some old school Saturday Night Fever dance moves to this one. It’s more than appropriate.

The Academic – Kids (Don’t End Up Like Me)

The Academic have returned with their signature indie pop style to give us the first sampling from their upcoming EP, ‘Community Spirit’, with their latest, self-produced release ‘Kids (Don’t End Up Like Me)’. Music by The Academic generally tends to be very radio friendly and ‘Kids’ is no exception. The track basically sums up the fear of not escaping your small home town. Some could call it a lesson to listeners to reach and strive for greatness rather than settling for the same old things day in and day out. The Academic have, as always, that wonderfully unique, anthemic vibe to their music and the song is guaranteed to get stuck in your head.

Various Artists – Disney’s Cruella

When you have a fabulous movie, laden with extravagant fashion, what else do you need? Well a killer soundtrack to go with it and the soundtrack to Disney’s Cruella delivers in spades. With a wonderful song written and performed by Florence + the Machine (Call Me Cruella) and music composed by Nicholas Britell, the soundtrack also includes a who’s who of 60s/70s icons to provide a fantastic backdrop to an equally fantastic movie.
