New Music weekend 2/4/21

Another week has passed and it’s our favourite time of the week again; it’s New Music time! This week sees a number of artists that started their careers as Disney Stars, a few artists who have been on our playlists for years and a number of up and coming artists! The overall message of many of the songs this week is: no matter what you are going through or battling through, you are not alone!

If you’d prefer to head straight to the playlist, click here.

Au/Ra & Alan Walker – Dead Girl!

This is not the first time this pair has come together but “Dead Girl!” is perfect for those of you who love dance tracks. The lyrics seem to be about standing out from the rest with “guess I ain’t like them” featuring prominently. However, in this case the music is what really stands out. The synths and beat match well with the lyrics and give a sense of the out of this world almost supernatural lyrics.

BTS – film out

BTS continuously amaze with the range of music that they utilise in their music. film out is the latest release from the South Korean group’s upcoming Japanese language album. The single is beautiful in its simplicity with beautiful piano laying the foundation for a bittersweet song about not being with the person in your memories. The harmonies in this track alone show why BTS has such a massive following.

Chloe Moriondo – ‘I Eat Boys’

Chloe Moriondo is an American singer-songwriter and YouTuber from Michigan, US. Her music is an incredible mix of Indie Pop. ‘I Eat Boys’ is her fourth single from her upcoming album ‘Blood Bunny’ set for release in May. ‘I Eat Boys’ music wise is an upbeat poppy feel but, listen closely to the lyrics as Chloe does a great job of listing her inner thoughts on an important topic. If you need a visual representation while listening to this song please, watch the music video as it shows all!

Demi Lovato – ‘Dancing With The Devil… The Art Of Starting Over’ Album

With the release of Demi’s documentary entitled ‘Dancing With The Devil’ she released her album ‘Dancing With The Devil… The Art of Starting Over’ yesterday. We have been a long time fan of Demi Lovato here at Our Muchness Guide dating back to her Disney Channel Days. This Album is Demi’s rawest, most bluntly honest and inspiring album yet! The album is made up of nineteen songs bringing you on a journey from the devastating addiction, extreme low point to the constant battle to reach her happy place and true recovery. The Album ends on a promising note. You need to start at the beginning of this album and listen all the way through! Keep your ears peeled for her songs featuring Ariana Grande, Sam Fischer, Noah Cyrus and Saweetie. Lastly, we say “make sure you take a bow Demi, you should be incredibly proud of this body of work and we are so proud of your strength”.

Dove Cameron – LazyBaby

Seems like Disney darling Dove Cameron has grown up while working for the House of Mouse but her recent release “LazyBaby” is, as Dove says herself, not a break up song but rather a breakthrough song. The track does refer to a break up and is written from the point of view where the other party isn’t loving you enough, the way you need to be loved or has just, in general, stopped putting in the effort. However, the beat, tempo and tone of the track make it upbeat and summery.

Lee James – ‘Loving You’ Sarah McTernan & HalfTraxx (Remix)

Lee James is one of our Homegrown Music Heroes. He is a sixteen year old up and coming music producer and DJ from Limerick. His latest music release is a remix of the single ‘Loving You’ by Sarah McTernan and HalfTraxx. For anyone who is not familiar with Lee’s music, use this remix as an introduction to what he can do before looking up his own original music! We enjoyed Lee’s take on this fun song and wish we could be on a night out on a dancefloor dancing to this one!

LilHuddy – The Eulogy of You and Me (Acoustic)

LilHuddy, otherwise known as Chase Hudson, has released a new stripped back version of the power-punk anthem “The Eulogy of You and Me.” The song expresses the feeling of relief when free from a toxic relationship but this version of the track is softer and more emotional that the freedom cry that is the original.

Olivia Rodrigo – ‘deja vu’

Next up is the highly anticipated follow up single from ‘Driver’s Licence’ by Olivia Rodrigo. Her new single is entitled ‘deja vu’ and honestly if there was an award for the song on our list that sounds written by someone who grew up blasting Taylor Swift music in their room, it would go to Olivia. If you thought ‘Driver’s Licence’ called out the guy who broke her heart, wait until you hear ‘deja vu’! Here are moments in the song that made me say “Did she really say that!”. This song is going to hit home with a lot of people no matter what age they are.

Robert Grace – No Hope (The Frog Song)

Ever heard a song that sampled a literal frog? Well, thanks to Robert Grace, now you have. The single is very different from Grace’s previous releases but it just shows his range. The track shows exactly how likely Grace is to return to any previous, self absorbed love interest. Oddly enough, the frog creates a pretty unique beat that opens and closes the track and Grace has made it work in this dancy, bassy single.

Sofia Carson – Fool’s Gold

Another of the ladies from Disney who is branching out and finding a more mature sound and showcasing her multi talented nature, Sofia’s latest track is asking if a person is the real deal or not. The track itself is definitely upbeat with a bass heavy, funk groove to keep you bopping along and I, personally, hope she continues along this stream of thought and sound with future releases.

Tate McRae – Too Young To Be Sad EP

With the iconic “you broke me first” appearing on the EP, the EP as a whole has a lot to live up to and it does. At 17 years old, McRae has shown that she is a natural storyteller with emotional maturity and depth that isn’t all too common in someone her age. She is more than capable of conveying the struggles of every stage of young love from falling for a person to miscommunication and difficulties to breaking up and if you loved You Broke Me First you should really listen to the EP.

Tom Odell – ‘Monster v.2’

Many of our readers may be familiar with Tom Odell but, for those of you who don’t know who he is, Tom is an English singer songwriter whose music has gotten us through many stages of life! His latest single ‘Monster v.2’ is a song about his battle with overcoming panic attacks and has quickly become an anthem for those who suffer for them too. The beauty of this song can be seen in the music video that Tom made with the help of his fans after asking them to send him clips of what they thought was a monster! The song itself is a reminder that everyone is fighting their own inner battles but, ‘Monster v.2’ music video really hits home that you are not alone in your fight, a lot of people are silently battling alongside you.

Trousdale – ‘Look Around’ EP

Trousdale are a three piece powerhouse of a band! Hailing from the US, these ladies list HAIM, Kacey Musgraves and Nash as some of their musical inspirations! The band is made up of Quinn D’Andrea, Georgia Greene and Lauren Jones. One reason you need to listen to Trousdale is for their memorising harmonies. With the use of minimalistic instruments, the forefront of all their songs on their debut EP ‘Look Around’ makes the listener focus on the phenomenal vocals of these three incredible ladies! The EP is made up of four songs and by a landslide ‘Better Off’ is my (Niamh’s) favourite. We look forward to seeing what path Trousdale takes next but, for now, we’ll get lost in the stunning debut EP ‘Look Around’.
