Wild Youth – Through The Phone

Two music posts from Niamh in the space of a few days? You better believe it! Today’s post is dedicated to Wild Youth’s latest single ‘Through The Phone‘. This one is going to hit home for many of you but especially anyone who is currently working their way through a long distance relationship. So, as always grab your earphones, sit back and relax as we dive right into the world of Wild Youth!

Wild Youth are a four piece band that came together in Dublin back in 2016. The members are Callum McAdam (Drummer) Conor O’Donohoe (keyboards/vocals), David Whelan (vocals/guitar) and Ed Porter (guitar/vocals). If you have been lucky enough to see them live or, you think someday you will, the other person on stage with them is their session bassist Twiggy (yes, that is the name you need to refer to him by). They released their debut single ‘All or Nothing’ in 2017 and since then they have been taking the Irish Music Chart by storm.

They’ve travelled up and down Ireland many times since 2017. Had a few UK dates of their own and support slots on The Script’s and Kodaline’s European Tours. Their debut EP ‘The Last Goodbye’ dropped in 2019 and my favourite of their songs are still the unreleased ones that; if you spend enough time you YouTube you’ll find them *cough* ‘Chemicals’ *cough*. There seems to be no stopping the band who are constantly onto big and better things!

‘Through The Phone’ is Wild Youth’s second single of 2020, which came out on November 13th and dropped just nine weeks after their widely anticipated first release of 2020, ‘Next to You’. For me, the best Wild Youth songs are the ones where the lyrics speak volumes. It is not about the music or which one makes you dance the most; it’s the one that makes you stop and makes you take notice of the most important parts of the song. ‘Through The Phone’ is this song.

2020 has seen Wild Youth take an entire new direction with their music to what they have previously released. The new vibe wouldn’t look out of place in the 80’s it seems but today we are here to talk about ‘Through The Phone’. Throw aside the need to be relevant and get ready to be immersed inside an unfolding love story that will be familiar to many.

One thing the song does exceptional well is capturing the moments of the early stages of falling in love. With lyrics such as:

“We were lying in bed

’Cause I don’t want this to ever end”

and

I’ll be staying up late under covers

So we can talk to each other”

You’re going to be giddy and rooting for the couple in question or you’re going to relive your most recent long distance relationship or relive moments of your current long distance relationship. Honestly, with the year that has been, it is nice to get lost in a song for three minutes and thirty-one seconds while being surrounded by a sense of love.

In terms of the music ‘Through The Phone‘, the music is simple and effective. It is catchy enough for the listener to snap along at the right moments but, for this song, it takes a back seat to the lyrics and it works perfectly. If you are someone who likes to focus on just the music, make sure you listen to the song via your headphones/earphones to not miss a thing.

In comparison to their previously released songs, I haven’t fallen in love with one of their songs after one listen since ‘Drinking About You’. This statement in itself will probably make a number of people question my sanity or laugh but ‘Through The Phone’ is a perfect parallel story to ‘Drinking About You’. What this proves for me is, when it comes to extremely personal stories within Wild Youth’s songs, Conor O’Donohoe, who is their main song-writer, has got it right!

Overall, my full thoughts can be summed up with a reference myself and Emma have: “This is the one!”

I can only talk for myself but, out of everything Wild Youth has released, this one is the one that has the most meaning for me and the one that I will gladly show anyone when asked about what makes Wild Youth special to me.
