Favourite Halloween Costumes of the Past

Day six is dedicated to those who go all out for Halloween. A number of my friends spent weeks planning their Halloween Costumes, Hair and Make Up while I usually scrambled to put something fun together last minute. So, as everyone scrambles to make homemade costumes from their wardrobe for Zoom parties with their nearest and dearest this year, I thought I would talk about the six top Halloween Costumes that defined me growing up! Think back for a moment to Halloween Nights gone by, does one or a series of costumes come to mind? For me there is the good, the bad and the nerdy.

Witch

Aka the go to Halloween Costume for any female growing up. Gone are the days of donning a black sack, buying a witch’s hat with an awful wig that spent more time in your mouth than covering your hair, fake witches fingers and a fake nose! Now, you have fun, sparkly, witchy, princess based costumes for kids. This will be an easy costume for anyone this Halloween just throw on some black clothing, find a hat or make one and don’t forget the dark make up and voila; you are a witch!

Queen Amidala

Yes, you read that right Queen Amidala from Star Wars. This one has to date back to around me being the age of six or seven. Star Wars played an important part of my movie education growing up along with a number of Sci Fi and Fantasy Movies; I really didn’t stand a chance of not being influenced by one of these movies. While other kids my age were going for the normal costumes, I was stuffing tights with more tights and socks to make a homemade head piece that somewhat resembles Queen Amidala’s. The costume I am most proud of from my youth!

Mariah – Beyblade

When I say Beyblade was one of my favourite shows as a kid I am being deadly serious! Growing up in our first house in Carlow, I was one of the only girls along our row of houses and like Mariah preferred to hang out with the boys rather than the few girls on the street. It was also thanks to this character that I really wanted pink hair for years! Mariah was also the sassiest amazing female character in that show! Can you blame me for adoring her?!  Gosh, younger Niamh had wild dreams! I never went pink but I like to think my red, purple and blue hair phases were because of Mariah!

Wednesday Addams

The best spooky character growing up in my opinion! I adore the Addams Family, every year we watch the movies over and over again. Wednesday Addams was the funniest character to take on her personality when dressing up as her. My argument on this one is keeping it appropriate because it’s Wednesday! You may not agree with me but, I like her the way she is.

Bellatrix Lestrange

The costume I am probably most famous for from Halloween, the last Harry Potter movie premiere or RTE News from our convention days. During Halloween, dressing up as Bellatrix was more than just wearing the gear, you had to become Bellatrix when you wore that outfit! Her persona is the extreme of what I am now, so this character was my favourite to have some fun with and creep out my friends with!

Dead Fangirl

The last college Halloween Party I was at I dressed up as a Dead Fangirl. A lot of my friends didn’t understand why I’d prefer to put my money towards going to gigs when there were nights on the town to be had! So, as a fun play on what others used as an insult, I turned it into something fun. The old Niall Horan t-shirt got ruined but it was so worth it! Might just have to do an updated version of this one this Halloween as I am missing going to live music terribly!
