Sweet October – Aoife Scott

Today’s post is kicking it back to music which gets us through the day here at Our Muchness Guide! Today’s post is focusing on Aoife Scott’s new single ‘Sweet October’ which comes out this Friday, October 23rd. We were incredibly excited to receive the single in advance of its release as this song has been making an appearance during Aoife’s online gigs and socially distanced gigs in recent months. In my opinion, this song is what the world needs right now to remember that little things can make your day better. ‘Sweet October’ is certainly the breath of a crisp Autumn air that we all need in our life during this tough and challenging year. So, for the next few moments, I want you to sit back and relax as I take you on a journey through ‘Sweet October’ and Aoife’s journey to date.

Firstly, let me introduce you to Aoife Scott. Aoife is an acclaimed Irish Folk singer, whose unique and captivating voice will draw you in from the first lyric. A Dublin singer born and raised within a very prominent Irish music family; the Black Family. She is now living in the magical countryside of Kildare; Aoife’s songs to date capture the spellbinding memories of these places along with stories of her travels from around our beautiful country of Ireland and beyond. With two no.1 Albums under her belt, countless awards such as Best Single of the Year 2019 at the ALSR Celtic Music Awards and Emerging Artist of the Year 2018 at the Live Ireland Awards (US). It is no wonder that her audience were waiting patiently and sometimes not so patiently for her next release!

2020 started off an unforgettable year for Aoife, she launched her second album ‘Homebird’ at the Tradfest in Dublin back in January to a captivated audience. The year was shaping up to be one of Aoife’s best yet as she was awarded ASLR Celtic Music Awards Female Vocalist of the Year 2020. She spent most of January and February promoting her newest album ‘Homebird’ across the radio waves and with TV appearances including RTÉ’s The Late Late Show.

As the first lockdown was happening in Ireland, Aoife and her partner in crime in all things music and in life, Andy Meaney, were in America starting their North American Spring Tour which was quickly cancelled due to lockdowns across the board. After a few weeks of assessing life and living through all the down time that comes with a lockdown, she decided like many artists around the globe began to lift her audience’s spirits; she did this by hosting online gigs during lockdown. Aoife and her team decided to go one step further  and produced high quality online gigs before moving to socially distanced gigs and online gigs running simultaneously. If these gigs are something you’d be interested in, keep an eye on Aoife’s social platforms (listed at the bottom of this post) as there are a few more planned for the rest of 2020 and into 2021.

Back to the single we are here for ‘Sweet October’, it was penned during the first Irish Lockdown by Aoife and Andy Meaney with producer Ron Block (Alison Krauss & United Station & ‘Oh Brother Where Art Thou’. He also worked on her latest album with her). It is truly a song of hope and looking towards the future. Additional music on the single is provided by award winning musicians Ron Block and Barry Bales alongside Aoife’s band. ‘Sweet October’ in an ode to loved ones, shining memories and a perfect day out that even the rain cannot ruin! Despite the song being set along the West Coast of Ireland, I would encourage the listener to look out your closest window or, even better, go outside and immerse yourself in your October surroundings while listening to this song for the first listen. From the colourful October skies to the leaves changing colour, no matter where you are in the world you will be transported by Aoife to a place of hope and memories.

‘Sweet October’

From the very first note this song captivates the listener. The overall feeling of the song is light and I will be surprised if the song does not give you a nice, calming feeling after you listen to it. The song itself is built around memories, time with loved ones and truly immersing yourself in the beauty of the world around you.

One thing I adore about Aoife’s lyrics is that she doesn’t just sing about a topic, she paints a picture that you can visualise in your mind if you just give yourself the chance to close your eyes and get lost in the music. ‘Sweet October’ is no different to this. During the 3 minutes and 45 second song, you are going to be transported to a time and place where anything is possible if you just believe. With Aoife and Andy’s captivating vocals in this song, you won’t be long letting go of any negative feelings and being influenced by positive and hopeful feelings.

Regardless, if you have visited Kilkee on your travels across Ireland or not, ‘Sweet October’ allows you to travel via the music on a trip to a place which holds dear memories for the artists. During the chorus, one is reminded that regardless where you are in the world you should take some time to get lost in your surroundings. Nature is beautiful and often will unlock memories we forgot we had. If you were to take one thing away from this song it would be that regardless how you are feeling, the outside world is just waiting for you to explore it and ready to help you feel better.

In recent months as, 2020 is dominated by a grey cloud that is affecting all of us, ‘Sweet October’ offers a glimmer of hope that, even during the darkest days to come, this song may just be the solace many of us need to listen to to give us that lift of hope that will be needed.

Although I was lucky enough to hear this song a number of times in recent months during Aoife’s online gigs, nothing prepared me for listening to the studio version of ‘Sweet October’ for the first time. If you are like me, a sentimental individual at heart, I’d advise you to have a tissue at hand. If you truly give yourself over to the music and feeling anyway down, this song is going to make you feel better instantly.

‘Sweet October’ is out on all platforms this Friday October 23rd but, if you cannot wait until then click the video below. The video is now live on YouTube.
